Martian Saucer
The Martian Saucer is the deadliest enemy in Martian Madness and the reason you farm this event. Phase 1 has 4 turrets (minigun, rocket, laser) that chip you down. Phase 2 fires a death ray that deals 150+ damage per tick — instant death if you don't move vertically. The payoff: Cosmic Car Key (UFO mount), Xenopopper, Influx Waver, and Laser Machinegun.
Quick GuideHard
- Destroy all 4 turrets before the Saucer enters Phase 2 death ray mode
- The death ray sweeps horizontally — dodge by moving VERTICALLY, not sideways
- Homing weapons (Chlorophyte Bullets, Bat Scepter, Xeno Staff) let you DPS while dodging
Recommended Equipment
Class Weapon Recommendations
Homing bullets track the Saucer and its turrets automatically. Best sustained DPS option for Phase 1 turret destruction

Core Strategy: Kill Turrets Fast, Dodge Ray Vertically
Destroy all 4 turrets ASAP, then survive death ray with vertical movement
Phase 1 is the safe DPS window. Once Phase 2 starts, the death ray forces you into constant evasion with limited attack time.
- 1Focus fire on turrets one at a time — they have separate HP pools
- 2Kill minigun turrets first (they deal the most consistent damage)
- 3When Phase 2 starts, fly to the top of your arena
- 4When the death ray sweeps toward you, drop down rapidly through platforms
- 5Attack the Saucer body between death ray sweeps
Combat Phases
Behavior Patterns
Phase 1: Turret Assault
The Saucer has 4 turrets — 2 miniguns, 1 rocket launcher, 1 laser cannon. All 4 turrets fire simultaneously and must be destroyed before Phase 2. The minigun turrets track fast but deal moderate damage. Rockets are slow but deal heavy splash damage. The laser turret fires bursts of rapid shots. Destroy turrets to reduce incoming fire, but the Saucer doesn't take body damage until all turrets are gone.
Phase 2: Death Ray
Once all turrets are destroyed, the Saucer opens its core and charges a death ray. The ray sweeps horizontally across the screen, dealing 150+ damage per tick. This WILL kill you in under a second if you stand in it. The only dodge is rapid vertical movement — fly up or drop down when the ray passes your height. The Saucer repeats this pattern until destroyed.
Transition Window
After all turrets are destroyed, there is a brief 1-2 second window before the death ray fires. Use this time to position yourself above or below the Saucer. Maximize DPS during this window — Phase 2 gives fewer safe attack windows.
Death Ray Dodge & Phase 2 Survival Techniques
Vertical Death Ray Dodge
The death ray sweeps HORIZONTALLY. You cannot outrun it sideways. When the ray reaches your height, fly straight up or drop straight down through platforms. The ray has a fixed sweep speed — once it passes your position, you have 2-3 seconds before the next sweep.
Turret Priority Order
Kill minigun turrets first — they deal the most consistent DPS. Then rockets (splash damage is dangerous), then laser. Each destroyed turret reduces incoming fire. The body takes 0 damage until ALL turrets are gone.
Phase 2 Attack Windows
After each death ray sweep, the Saucer pauses briefly before the next one. This 2-3 second window is your attack time. Use homing weapons (Chlorophyte Bullets, Bat Scepter) so you can deal damage while repositioning.
Class Strategies
Chlorophyte Bullets handle both Phase 1 turrets and Phase 2 body. Autopilot DPS while you focus on dodging.

Death Ray Instant KillHigh
Standing in the Phase 2 death ray for even 0.5 seconds deals 300+ damage
The ray sweeps horizontally. Dodge VERTICALLY — fly straight up or drop straight down through platforms when the ray reaches your height. Never try to outrun it sideways.
Turret Chip OverwhelmHigh
All 4 turrets firing simultaneously deal 200+ combined DPS in Phase 1
Focus fire turrets one at a time. Kill miniguns first (highest consistent damage). Cross Necklace extends invincibility frames to survive burst.
Rocket Splash DamageMed
Rockets from the Saucer deal area splash damage that catches you during platform transitions
Keep moving. Rockets are slow — change direction frequently. Never hover in one spot during Phase 1.
Panic During Phase 2Med
Death ray starts and player freezes or runs sideways instead of vertically
Practice the pattern: death ray sweeps left-to-right. When it reaches your position, fly UP. When it sweeps back, drop DOWN. Rhythm is everything.
Event TimerLow
Martian Madness ends if progress stalls or player dies repeatedly
Clear other Martian enemies between Saucer spawns. Stay mobile and keep the event bar moving. Multiple Saucers can spawn per event.

Drops
UFO Mount with infinite flight. No more wing dependency — fly anywhere, forever. The single most game-changing mount drop. If you only farm one item in Terraria, make it this one
Gun that fires bubbles which burst into homing bullets. With Crystal Bullets, each bubble spawns 4-5 homing shards. Top-tier Ranger weapon until Moon Lord
Rapid-fire laser gun. Ramps up fire rate over time to insane DPS. Great for stationary fights where you can hold fire
Sword that fires projectiles which re-hit the same target. Each projectile strikes 3 times for massive single-target damage. Best melee sword until Meowmere
Rocket launcher that creates lingering electric spheres. Area denial weapon — throw spheres on boss paths for passive damage
Grappling hook that lets you orbit its anchor point. Unique movement option but niche use

FAQ
QHow do I dodge the Martian Saucer death ray?
The death ray sweeps horizontally across the screen. You CANNOT outrun it sideways. The only dodge is vertical movement. Position yourself at the top of your arena. When the ray reaches your height, drop straight down through platforms. When it sweeps back up, fly straight up. Build your arena with 3-4 platform layers spaced 15-20 tiles apart for dodging room.
QWhat does the Martian Saucer drop?
Six items at ~11% each: Cosmic Car Key (UFO mount with infinite flight — the best mount in the game), Xenopopper (bubble gun, top-tier ranger weapon), Influx Waver (sword that re-hits 3 times), Laser Machinegun (rapid-fire magic gun), Electrosphere Launcher (area denial rockets), and Anti-Gravity Hook. Cosmic Car Key and Influx Waver are the most impactful drops.
QHow do I trigger Martian Madness in Terraria?
Fly to the outer thirds of the world map (not the center) at space layer height. A Martian Probe will eventually spawn. Let it detect you (it turns red), then let it fly away and escape. Do NOT kill it. Once the probe escapes, Martian Madness begins. This requires post-Golem progression — probes won't spawn before defeating Golem.
QWhat is the best weapon for the Martian Saucer?
Megashark + Chlorophyte Bullets is the safest choice — homing bullets track turrets and body automatically, letting you focus entirely on dodging. Possessed Hatchet (melee) auto-homes similarly. Bat Scepter (mage) sends homing bats. For raw DPS, Razorpine shreds turrets the fastest and Flying Dragon (from Betsy) is the strongest overall if you have it.
QHow rare is the Cosmic Car Key?
~11.11% drop rate per Martian Saucer kill. Multiple Saucers can spawn during a single Martian Madness event, so you get several chances per event. On average, you'll need 9 kills. With 2-3 Saucers per event, expect 3-4 events before it drops. It is worth every attempt — infinite flight completely changes how you play.
QCan I cheese the Martian Saucer?
Sort of. In Phase 1, you can hover above the Saucer's turret range and use homing weapons (Chlorophyte Bullets reach far). In Phase 2, there is no cheese — the death ray covers the entire horizontal screen. You MUST dodge vertically. Some players build a very tall arena with teleporters at top and bottom for instant vertical repositioning, but basic wings and platforms work fine.
Stats
HP listed is for the body after turrets. Each turret has its own HP pool. Phase 2 death ray deals 150+ damage per tick — dodge vertically or die.
