Moon Lord

Moon Lord is Terraria's final boss — 145,000 combined HP across three True Eyes and a core, Phantasmal Deathray hitting 150+ per tick, and a 10-weapon drop pool where you get 2 non-duplicate weapons per kill (~20% each). Spawns after clearing all 4 Celestial Pillars or via Celestial Sigil (12 of each fragment).

Quick GuideHard

Best TimingAfter clearing all 4 Celestial Pillars and crafting Lunar armor
Easiest MethodSolar Eruption through walls — hide behind blocks during Deathray and keep dealing damage
Core TechniqueHand eyes first (25k HP each) → forehead eye (45k HP) → all-in on core
Goal ItemsCollect Luminite (100% guaranteed) + 2 weapon drops per kill (10-weapon pool, ~20% each)

Core Strategy

Most Important Principle

Maximum Priority

Final boss, 145,000 combined HP, Phantasmal Deathray is the deadliest attack in the game

  1. 1
Build a massive multi-layer arena with Nurse housing nearby
  2. 2
Equip Lunar Fragment armor matching your class
  3. 3
Kill hand eyes first (25,000 HP each) then forehead eye (45,000 HP)
  4. 4
Rod of Discord to dodge Deathray — vertical movement through the beam
  5. 5
Moon Bite only blocks lifesteal, potions and Nurse still work
  6. 6
Maximum DPS on the core once exposed to prevent regen

Combat Phases

100%
50%
0%
Phase 1 — Three True EyesHand eyes: 25,000 HP, 40 DEF each. Forehead eye: 45,000 HP, 50 DEF. Kill hand eyes first. Hand eyes use Phantasmal Bolts/Eyes, forehead eye fires Deathray.
Phase 2 — Core ExposedAll 3 eyes destroyed → core exposed (50,000 HP, 70 DEF). Free-floating True Eyes continue attacking. Core regenerates — DPS must exceed regen or you lose.
Moon Bite PhaseMoon Lord periodically latches tongue, inflicting Moon Bite. Only blocks lifesteal (Vampire Knives, Spectre Hood). Potions and Nurse healing remain fully functional.

Behavior Patterns

👁️

Phase 1: Three True Eyes

Moon Lord has 3 True Eyes of Cthulhu — two in his hands (25,000 HP each, 40 DEF) and one in his forehead (45,000 HP, 50 DEF). Each eye attacks independently with Phantasmal Deathray, Bolts, and Eyes. Kill hand eyes first, forehead eye last — minimize Deathray exposure time.

💀

Phase 2: Core Exposed

All 3 eyes destroyed → core exposed (50,000 HP, 70 DEF). Free-floating True Eyes keep attacking. The core regenerates HP — if your DPS is too low, it heals back. Go all-in.

🌑

Moon Lord's Tongue (Moon Bite)

Moon Lord periodically latches his tongue onto you, inflicting Moon Bite. Moon Bite only blocks lifesteal effects (Vampire Knives, Spectre Hood). Potions and Nurse healing still work during Moon Bite. Don't panic — you can still heal.

Phantasmal Deathray Survival

⬆️

Vertical Dodge

Deathray sweeps horizontally. Fly straight up or drop down — cross at the narrowest point. Running sideways = death, the sweep tracks your horizontal position.

🔮

Rod of Discord Blink

Instant teleport through the beam. 6s cooldown and 1/6 HP penalty are nothing compared to eating a Deathray. Farm Chaos Elementals in Hallow.

🧱

Wall Cheese (Solar Eruption)

Solar Eruption passes through blocks. Build a solid block shelter and attack through the wall. Deathray can't penetrate solid blocks. Trivializes the hardest phase. Melee exclusive perk.

Class Strategies

🏹Ranger
Moderate — consistent DPS but dodging skills required

Vortex Beater + Chlorophyte Bullets = auto-tracking DPS. Focus on dodging.

3Vortex Armor stealth mode gives massive damage boost — activate during safe windows
4Mid-range positioning — too close means no reaction time, too far and homing falls off

Common Mistakes

💀Phantasmal DeathrayHigh
Cause

Forehead eye beam sweeps the arena at 150+ damage per tick.

Solution

Dodge VERTICALLY, not horizontally. The sweep tracks horizontal position. Fly up or drop down through the beam at its narrowest. Rod of Discord if needed.

👅Moon Bite MisconceptionHigh
Cause

Thinking Moon Bite blocks all healing so you stop trying to recover.

Solution

Moon Bite only blocks lifesteal (Vampire Knives, Spectre Hood). Potions and Nurse work fine during Moon Bite. Keep healing.

🔋Core RegenMed
Cause

DPS too low on exposed core, it heals back.

Solution

Save burst for core phase. Pop all damage potions. 100% firepower on core — ignore True Eyes unless they block your aim.

👁️Wrong Eye OrderMed
Cause

Killing forehead eye first = fighting free True Eyes + Deathray + remaining eyes simultaneously.

Solution

Hand eyes first (25k HP each). Forehead Deathray is the biggest threat — minimize overlap time.

🏥Nurse TimingLow
Cause

Not knowing when to visit Nurse, wasting time or missing healing windows.

Solution

Nurse works even during Moon Bite (only lifesteal is blocked). Fly to Nurse whenever HP is critical, no need to wait for Moon Bite to end.

FAQ

Q

What is the best weapon to beat Moon Lord?

Solar Eruption. It passes through blocks, hits all three eyes, and lets you hide behind solid walls during Deathray. Safest weapon in the game for this fight. Stardust Dragon Staff (summoner) for hands-free DPS. Nebula Blaze (mage) for homing while mobile. Vortex Beater + Chlorophyte Bullets (ranger) for auto-tracking. If you can only pick one — Solar Eruption through walls is a different tier of safety.

Q

What order should I destroy Moon Lord's eyes?

Hand eyes first (25,000 HP, 40 DEF each), forehead eye last (45,000 HP, 50 DEF). Hand eyes fire Phantasmal Bolts and Eyes — dodgeable. The forehead eye fires Phantasmal Deathray — 150+ damage per tick. Killing the forehead eye last minimizes your time fighting alongside the Deathray. After all 3 eyes pop, the core (50,000 HP, 70 DEF) is exposed. Full DPS.

Q

How do I dodge the Phantasmal Deathray?

The Deathray sweeps horizontally from the forehead eye. Fly UP or DROP DOWN — cross the beam vertically at its narrowest point. Do NOT run sideways. The sweep tracks your horizontal position, so horizontal movement gets you killed. Rod of Discord teleports through it instantly — 6s cooldown and 1/6 HP penalty beats eating a Deathray. Multi-layer platforms give you vertical escape room.

Q

What does Moon Lord drop?

Each kill drops 2 non-duplicate weapons from a 10-weapon pool (~20% each): Meowmere, Star Wrath, Terrarian, S.D.M.G., Last Prism, Lunar Flare, Rainbow Crystal Staff, Lunar Portal Staff, Celebration Mk2. Plus 70-90 Luminite (100% guaranteed) and a Portal Gun (100% guaranteed). Full collection takes roughly 8-12 kills.

Q

Does Moon Bite block potions and Nurse healing?

No. Moon Bite only blocks lifesteal effects — Vampire Knives healing, Spectre Hood healing, etc. Potions and Nurse healing are completely unaffected by Moon Bite. You can drink potions and visit the Nurse during Moon Bite with no issues. This is one of the most common misconceptions about the fight.

Q

What armor should I use for Moon Lord?

Lunar Fragment armor for your class. Solar Flare (melee) — dash + shield for tankiness. Vortex (ranger) — stealth mode for massive ranged damage bursts. Nebula (mage) — damage/mana/life boosters snowball your power. Stardust (summoner) — Stardust Guardian for free extra DPS. All 4 sets craft at Ancient Manipulator with Luminite Bars + class Fragments.

Q

Why does Moon Lord keep healing back to full?

Your DPS on the core is too low. Once all 3 eyes are destroyed, the core (50,000 HP, 70 DEF) starts regenerating. If your damage output doesn't exceed the regen rate, it heals back. Fix: save all burst for core phase — pop Wrath/Rage Potion right before the core opens, switch to your highest-DPS weapon, and ignore the floating True Eyes unless they block your aim. Solar Eruption through walls or Phantasm + Holy Arrows are the best core-phase burst options.

Q

Moon Lord didn't spawn after I killed all 4 pillars — what happened?

After killing the 4th Celestial Pillar, there's a 1-minute countdown before Moon Lord appears. The screen goes dark, the message "Impending doom approaches..." shows up, and you get 60 seconds to prepare. If you died during that countdown, Moon Lord still spawns — get back to your arena fast. If nothing happened, check that all 4 pillars are actually dead (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust). You can also skip the pillars entirely by crafting a Celestial Sigil at the Ancient Manipulator (12 of each fragment).
