Mourning Wood
Mourning Wood is the first mini-boss of the Pumpkin Moon event, spawning from Wave 4 onward. It rains Greek Fire from above and shoots flaming projectiles along the ground. Farm it for Spooky Wood and the Necromantic Scroll -- two of the best summoner progression items in the game.
Quick GuideMedium
- Mourning Wood is ground-bound -- elevated platforms trivialize the fight
- Greek Fire lingers on surfaces, so keep moving horizontally

Core Strategy: Stay Above, Keep Moving
Stay on elevated platforms and never stop moving horizontally to avoid Greek Fire pools!
Mourning Wood is ground-bound with 12,000 HP and 28 defense. Its biggest threat is the Greek Fire rain that lingers on surfaces. By staying on platforms above it and constantly moving, you dodge most incoming damage while maintaining line of sight for your weapons.
- 1Start the fight on the second platform layer to stay above ground fire
- 2Move laterally across the arena to avoid Greek Fire rain stacking in one area
- 3Drop to lower platforms only when Greek Fire blocks your current level
- 4Focus sustained DPS -- Mourning Wood has no phase changes or enrage mechanics
- 5Farm multiple kills per night for Spooky Wood stockpile
Combat Phases
Behavior Patterns
Greek Fire Rain
Mourning Wood launches Greek Fire projectiles into the air that rain down in an area around its position. Each fire deals 100 base damage and lingers on the ground. This is the main threat -- keep moving laterally to avoid standing in fire puddles.
Flaming Wood Shots
Fires burning wood projectiles directly at the player. These travel fast and deal 80 base damage on contact. Dodge vertically by dropping to a lower platform when you see them launch.
Ground Movement
Mourning Wood walks along the ground and cannot fly. It moves at moderate speed toward the player. Use this predictability to maintain distance -- stay on elevated platforms and it can only reach you with ranged attacks.
Advanced Mourning Wood Techniques
Greek Fire Avoidance Pattern
Move in a consistent direction across the arena. Greek Fire lands where you were, not where you're going. By kiting in one direction, you leave all fire behind you and always have clean platforms ahead.
AFK Farm Setup
Build a box with a thin lava layer on top and hoik traps below. Mourning Wood walks into the kill zone and dies to lava + traps while you stand safely above. Works for overnight Spooky Wood farming.
Wave Efficiency
Kill Mourning Wood as fast as possible to push waves. Higher waves spawn more Mourning Woods simultaneously, increasing Spooky Wood drops per minute. Reach Wave 15+ for maximum drop rates on rare items.
Class Strategies
Chain Gun + Chlorophyte Bullets is the easiest setup. Homing bullets auto-target while you focus on dodging Greek Fire.

Greek Fire Pool DamageHigh
Standing in Greek Fire puddles that linger on platforms, taking 100+ damage per tick
Never stop moving horizontally. Drop to a lower platform when fire covers your current level. The fire despawns after a few seconds.
Fire Rain StackingHigh
Staying in one spot causes multiple Greek Fire projectiles to rain on the same area
Kite Mourning Wood across the full arena width. Spread out the fire so no single area becomes a death zone.
Arena Too SmallMed
Cramped arena leaves nowhere to dodge when fire covers platforms
Build at least 120 blocks wide with 3-4 platform layers. More space = more safe spots to rotate to.
Running Out of NightMed
Pumpkin Moon ends at dawn. Slow kills mean fewer waves and less loot
Maximize DPS to clear waves faster. Use damage potions and class emblems to push kill speed.

FAQ
QHow much Spooky Wood do you need for Spooky Armor in Terraria?
You need 750 Spooky Wood total for the full Spooky Armor set -- 200 for the helmet, 300 for the chestplate, and 250 for the leggings. Mourning Wood drops 50-200 Spooky Wood per kill, so plan on 4-15 kills. At higher Pumpkin Moon waves, multiple Mourning Woods spawn simultaneously, making farming faster. Spooky Armor gives +3 max minions and solid defense, making it the best summoner armor until Stardust.
QWhat does Mourning Wood drop in Terraria?
Mourning Wood guaranteed drops Spooky Wood (50-200 per kill). Rare drops include Necromantic Scroll (summoner accessory, +1 minion +10% damage), Stake Launcher (high-damage ranged weapon), Spooky Twig (Cursed Sapling pet), and Mourning Wood Trophy. Drop rates scale with wave number -- Wave 4 gives ~2% for rare items, Wave 15 gives up to 10%. Farm later waves for better odds.
QHow do you dodge Mourning Wood Greek Fire in Terraria?
Greek Fire rains down from above and lingers on surfaces for several seconds. The key: never stop moving horizontally. The fire targets your position when launched, so constant movement means it lands behind you. Build a wide arena (120+ blocks) with multiple platform layers. When fire covers your current platform, drop to a lower one. The fire despawns quickly, so looping back is safe after a few seconds.
QWhen does Mourning Wood spawn in Pumpkin Moon?
Mourning Wood first appears at Wave 4 of the Pumpkin Moon event. It continues spawning in increasing numbers through all remaining waves. By Wave 10+, multiple Mourning Woods spawn at once. The Pumpkin Moon is a post-Plantera night event activated by the Pumpkin Moon Medallion (30 Pumpkins + 5 Ectoplasm + 10 Hallowed Bars at a Mythril Anvil). Use it at night -- the event ends at dawn.
QIs Mourning Wood hard to beat in Terraria?
Mourning Wood is one of the easier event mini-bosses. It has 12,000 HP, 28 defense, and it cannot fly -- meaning platform arenas make it almost helpless. The only real danger is Greek Fire, and that's easily dodged by staying mobile. With post-Plantera gear (Chlorophyte minimum), most players kill it in under 30 seconds. The challenge is farming enough of them efficiently to stock up on Spooky Wood before dawn.
