Post-WoF Armor Guide: Best Armor Before Plantera
Post-WoF Armor Guide: Best Armor Before Plantera
Overview
After entering Hardmode, pre-WoF armor won't protect you from new threats. Armor is the foundation of survival β defense directly determines how much damage you can take. This guide covers all important armor choices from early Hardmode to pre-Plantera.
Defense Mechanics
- Every 2 points of defense reduces damage taken by 1
- In Expert Mode, defense effectiveness is halved (4 defense = 1 damage reduction)
- Set bonuses are usually more valuable than raw defense numbers
- Class-specific bonuses should be prioritized over pure defense
Ore Armor Tiers
After breaking Demon/Crimson Altars, three tiers of Hardmode ores spawn in the world. Each world gets one of two variants per tier. Both variants are roughly equal in power.
π‘
Don't spend too much time on Tier 1-2 ore armor. Rush to Tier 3 ASAP β it's the minimum requirement for fighting Mechanical Bosses.
Special Armor Sets
Besides ore armor, several special sets can be obtained without defeating Mechanical Bosses. They're the best mid-game option for certain classes.
Frost Armor Frost Armor
Melee and ranged attacks inflict Frostburn debuff
Forbidden Armor Forbidden Armor
Double-tap down to summon Forbidden Storm (AoE sand attack) + boosts both mana and summon damage
Spider Armor Spider Armor
+3 max minions + increases minion damage
Hallowed Armor
After defeating Mechanical Bosses, you can craft Hallowed Armor. It's the best pre-Plantera armor β the "Holy Protection" death prevention set bonus is extremely powerful.
Hallowed Armor
Holy Protection: grants 2-second immunity upon taking fatal damage (30s cooldown)
πͺ Class Recommendations
Mask: +24 Def, +12% melee damage, +12% melee speed
Helmet: +15 Def, +10% ranged damage, +8% crit chance

Hallowed Armor (Headgear) β reduced mana cost + death prevention

Hallowed Armor (Hood) β +2 minions + death prevention
Tips & Advice
Here are some practical tips for choosing and upgrading armor.
Don't Skip Tier 3 Ore
Adamantite/Titanium armor is the minimum threshold for your first Mechanical Boss fight. Titanium's Shadow Dodge is especially strong.
Mixing Sets is OK
When you're midway through ore farming, mix pieces: e.g., Adamantite helmet + Palladium chest + Mythril legs. Any defense is better than none.
Rush Spider Cave (Summoner)
Summoners don't need ore β Spider Armor + Spider Staff can be obtained right at the start of Hardmode.
Titanium vs Adamantite
Titanium's Shadow Dodge (complete attack immunity) is much more valuable than Adamantite's raw defense in boss fights.
Expert Tip
In Expert/Master Mode, defense effectiveness is halved, making set bonuses even more crucial. Titanium's Shadow Dodge and Hallowed's death prevention are practically mandatory.
Summary
Early: Rush Tier 3 ore armor (Adamantite/Titanium), skip lower tiers
Mid: Pick class-specific special sets (Frost/Forbidden/Spider)
Late: Upgrade to Hallowed Armor immediately after Mech Bosses
Set bonuses matter more than raw defense β pick the right helmet for your class
Gear up and prepare for the Mechanical Bosses! πͺ
