Early Game Roadmap: Your Beginner Must-Do Checklist

From spawn to Wall of Flesh — the complete action plan for new players

Guide NPC

Top Priorities

Just spawned into a new world? Here are the three things you should focus on immediately to get a strong start:

Build HousingBuild valid NPC housing — at least 6 rooms for the essential NPCs (Guide, Merchant, Nurse, Arms Dealer, Demolitionist, Dryad).
Recruit NPCsRecruit key NPCs — The Merchant sells useful tools, the Nurse heals you, and the Arms Dealer sells ammo.
Upgrade GearUpgrade from starter gear — Mine ore to craft better pickaxes, armor, and weapons as soon as possible.
Build your base near the center of the world for easy access to both oceans, and leave room for more NPC housing.

Exploration Route

Explore the world in this order to maximize your progression safely:

Surface — Explore both directions, find chests in surface cabins, collect Life Crystals in caves.
Underground — Mine ores (Copper→Iron→Silver→Gold), find accessories in gold chests, collect gems.
Jungle — Find Jungle Spores and Stingers for Blade of Grass and Jungle armor. Beware of hornets!
Dungeon (after Skeletron) — Excellent weapons (Muramasa, Water Bolt) and accessories. Don't enter before beating Skeletron!
Underworld (Hell) — Mine Hellstone for Molten armor and the Fiery Greatsword. This is the final pre-Hardmode biome.

Boss Challenge Order

Challenge bosses in this recommended order for smooth progression:

King Slime (Optional) — Easiest boss, drops useful Ninja set and Slime Hook. Great for practice.
Eye of Cthulhu — First real boss. Requires 200+ HP. Drops Demonite/Crimtane ore for early upgrades.
Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu — Evil biome boss. Drops materials for Shadow/Crimson armor and Nightmare/Deathbringer Pickaxe.
Skeletron — Unlocks the Dungeon. Requires good mobility accessories and a decent arena.
Queen Bee (Optional) — Found in the Jungle. Drops Bee Gun, Bee Keeper, and Beenades (amazing for Wall of Flesh!).
Wall of Flesh — The final pre-Hardmode boss. Defeated in the Underworld using a long bridge. Triggers Hardmode!
Do NOT fight the Wall of Flesh until you have full Molten armor, a long Hell bridge, and plenty of Beenades or a Night's Edge!

Gear Upgrade Milestones

Key gear milestones to hit as you progress through the early game:

Ore Armor Progression: Copper → Iron → Silver → Gold → Platinum. Each tier unlocks better mining.
Jungle Armor — Excellent for mages, provides +16% magic damage. Requires Jungle Spores and Stingers.
Molten Armor — The best pre-Hardmode armor set. Requires mining Hellstone in the Underworld with an Obsidian Skull.
Key Accessories: Hermes/Spectre Boots for speed, Cloud in a Bottle for double jump, Shield of Cthulhu for dash.

Pre-Wall of Flesh Checklist

Make sure you've completed everything on this list before fighting the Wall of Flesh:

Full Molten Armor set equipped (or best available armor for your class).
Strong weapon ready — Night's Edge, Bee Gun, Molten Fury, or Star Cannon.
Accessories equipped — movement speed boots, double jump, Shield of Cthulhu.
Hell bridge built — a long flat runway in the Underworld (at least 1000 blocks).
Potions stocked — Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, and plenty of healing potions.
