Fishing Basics
Fishing is one of Terraria's most rewarding systems. You can grab rare weapons, skip Hardmode mining entirely by stockpiling crates, and farm potion ingredients on autopilot. All you need is a rod, bait, and water.
Your water pool needs at least 75 connected tiles to fish at all. 300+ tiles removes the size penalty in most biomes, and Ocean requires 1000+.
Your total fishing power = rod power + bait power + gear bonuses, multiplied by time-of-day and weather modifiers. Higher power means better catches and faster bite rates.

Reinforced Fishing Pole
15% power from 8 Iron Bars. Cheap, available right after your first mine trip. Gets the job done until you find the Mechanic.
Mechanic's Rod
30% power for 20 Gold. Buy it the moment you rescue the Mechanic from the Dungeon. Doubles your early-game power overnight.
Sitting Duck's Fishing Pole
40% power for 35 Gold from the Traveling Merchant. Random spawn makes it unreliable to plan around, but grab it if he shows up.
Golden Fishing Rod
50% power after 30 Angler quests. The grind takes real commitment (30+ in-game days), but nothing beats it. Pair with Master Bait for 100% base power.

Beginner Fishing Tips
Start with a Reinforced Fishing Pole and upgrade to Mechanic's Rod as soon as you rescue her
Craft Enchanted Nightcrawlers (Worm + Fallen Star) for reliable 35% bait power early on
Always fish during rain (+20%) and full moon (+10%) for maximum fishing power
Stockpile crates before Wall of Flesh — open them in Hardmode for free Cobalt, Mythril, and Adamantite
Complete Angler quests daily. The Golden Fishing Rod at 30 quests is the endgame goal
Build fishing pools at least 300 tiles wide in each biome. Under 300 tiles reduces your fishing power
Sonar Potions let you see what's biting — skip trash catches and only reel in what you want
Crate Potions massively boost crate drop rates. Always have them active when crate farming
Expert Tip
Stockpile crates before fighting the Wall of Flesh! Pre-Hardmode crates opened after entering Hardmode contain Hardmode ores, saving you significant mining time.
