Starting Out: Mode, World & Class in One Go
Game Mode Selection
Normal Mode
NormalStandard difficulty with regular enemy stats. You drop half your coins on death but keep all items. The best way to learn every mechanic without frustration.
Pick this if it's your first playthroughExpert Mode
ExpertEnemies have 2x HP, hit harder, and gain new AI patterns. Bosses drop exclusive Expert-only accessories like the Shield of Cthulhu. More coins drop to compensate.
Exclusive accessories make it worth the challengeMaster Mode
MasterEnemies have 3x HP and deal even more damage than Expert. Bosses drop cosmetic pets and relics — bragging rights, not power. You will die. A lot.

Recommended for multiplayer serversClass Selection
Melee
MeleeClose-range combat with swords, yoyos, and flails. High defense makes you tanky. Forgiving for beginners who miss dodges — you can facetank most early threats.
Ranged
RangedAttack from a safe distance with bows, guns, and repeaters. Ammo management adds a layer of strategy but keeps you out of danger. Minishark (6 damage, rapid fire) melts early bosses.
Mage
MagePowerful spells with high burst damage but limited by mana. Requires mana potions and mana management. Space Gun (17 damage, 0 mana with Meteor armor) is your best early option — huge DPS, paper-thin defense.
Summoner
SummonerMinions fight for you while you dodge. Lowest personal defense and early-game options are limited. Gets much stronger in Hardmode but the pre-HM grind is rough.

Early Game Roadmap — What to Do Next
Build Shelter & Craft Tools
Chop trees, build a house, craft a Work Bench, Furnace, and Anvil. Your base needs walls, a door, lighting, a table, and a chair to count as valid NPC housing.
Mine Ore & Upgrade Gear
Dig underground for Iron/Lead, then Gold/Platinum. Craft better pickaxes, armor, and weapons at each tier. Prioritize pickaxe upgrades — faster mining = faster progress.
Build NPC Housing
Expand your base with 6+ valid rooms. Merchant sells useful supplies, Nurse heals you, Arms Dealer sells guns. More NPCs = more options before your first boss.
Explore Surface Biomes
Loot surface chests for accessories like Hermes Boots, Cloud in a Bottle. Check the Jungle for Blade of Grass. Grab Life Crystals underground to reach 400 HP.
Tackle the Evil Biome
Smash Shadow Orbs (Corruption) or Crimson Hearts (Crimson) to get early guns, summon meteorites, and trigger boss fights. Smashing 3 spawns the biome boss — make sure your gear is ready before that third break.
Fight Pre-Hardmode Bosses
King Slime → Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu → Queen Bee → Deerclops (optional) → Skeletron. Don't skip Queen Bee — Beenades are your best weapon for Wall of Flesh.
Defeat Wall of Flesh
Craft a full set of Molten Armor (25 defense), build a long bridge in the Underworld, and throw the Guide Voodoo Doll in lava. Beating WoF unlocks Hardmode — the real game starts here.

Wall of Flesh
Wall of FleshCheat Sheet: Just Follow This
Build a full NPC apartment with at least 6 valid rooms so key NPCs can move in, giving you access to important items and services.
Always carry a Magic Mirror and healing potions. Stay alert while exploring and retreat immediately when facing danger.
Use the Guide's crafting lookup feature — place any material in the query slot to discover more crafting recipes.
Don't rush bosses. If you skip gear tiers, you'll get one-shot. Complete your progression first — Molten Armor (25 defense) is the baseline for Wall of Flesh.
Expert Tip
Don't rush to fight bosses. Complete your gear progression first and ensure your defense and weapons are sufficient before engaging.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do on the first night in Terraria?
Chop trees to get wood, craft a Workbench and basic tools, then build an enclosed shelter (at least 10 wide x 6 tall) with a door, torch, chair, and table before sunset. This keeps enemies out and doubles as your first NPC house.
What is the best class for beginners in Terraria?
Melee is the best class for beginners. High defense lets you survive mistakes, swords have wide swings that are easy to aim, and gear is readily available from mining. Ranged is a strong second choice — Minishark alone can carry you through early bosses.
What order should I fight bosses in Terraria?
The recommended pre-Hardmode boss order is: King Slime → Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu → Queen Bee → Deerclops (optional) → Skeletron → Wall of Flesh. Each boss drops materials that help you prepare for the next one.
Should I play Expert or Normal mode as a beginner?
Start with Normal mode. It lets you learn boss patterns, explore freely, and understand game mechanics without getting one-shot. Expert mode has exclusive accessories worth replaying for, but save it for your second run.
How do I find Life Crystals in Terraria?
Life Crystals spawn naturally in the Underground and Cavern layers. Look for glowing pink/red crystal-shaped objects in open caves. Mine them with any pickaxe and use them to increase your max HP by 20, up to 400 HP total.
What armor should I get before fighting my first boss?
Aim for Gold or Platinum Armor (13-16 defense) before your first real boss fight. If you're fighting King Slime, Iron/Lead armor works fine. For Eye of Cthulhu, Gold/Platinum armor with a Minishark or strong bow is ideal.
What is the best weapon to craft early in Terraria?
A Wooden Bow with Flaming Arrows is effective early on for ranged combat. For melee, craft a Gold/Platinum Broadsword as soon as you mine the ore. If you find Shurikens or Throwing Knives in chests, those work well too.
How do I build a valid NPC house?
A valid NPC house needs at least 60 tiles of space (including frame), background walls placed by the player, a light source (torch), a flat surface item (table or workbench), and a comfort item (chair). Each NPC requires their own separate room.
