How to Max NPC Happiness
Preferred Biome
Preferred BiomeEach NPC has a biome they love. Living in it gives a direct price reduction. This is the biggest single happiness factor — always start here.
Liked Neighbor
Liked NeighborCertain NPCs enjoy living near specific other NPCs. Stack this with biome preference for maximum discount.
Disliked Neighbor
Disliked NeighborSome NPC combinations cause unhappiness. Prices go up and they might refuse to sell Pylons.
Overcrowding
OvercrowdingMore than 3 NPCs within 25 tiles causes overcrowding penalties for all of them. This stacks — 5 NPCs together is brutal.

Pylons let you teleport between biomes instantly. Each biome has one Pylon — an NPC sells it when they're happy enough in that biome. You need 2+ NPCs near the Pylon to use it. Here's every Pylon and how to unlock it.
Forest Pylon
Forest / Surface2 happy NPCs in Forest. Guide + Zoologist is the easiest pair.
Snow Pylon
SnowMechanic + Goblin Tinkerer in Snow. Both prefer Snow and like each other.
Desert Pylon
DesertArms Dealer + Nurse in Desert. Both prefer Desert and like each other.
Jungle Pylon
JungleDryad + Witch Doctor in Jungle. Both prefer Jungle and like each other.
Ocean Pylon
OceanAngler + Pirate near the Ocean. Stylist works as a third.
Mushroom Pylon
Glowing MushroomTruffle + any liked NPC (Guide or Dryad) in a Mushroom biome.
Hallow Pylon
HallowParty Girl + Wizard in the Hallow. Both prefer Hallow.
Underground Pylon
Underground / CavernDemolitionist + Clothier underground. Both prefer Underground.
Built Wrong? Here's the Fastest Fix
Natural Walls Don't Count
Dirt, stone, and other naturally-generated walls look like valid backgrounds, but the game ignores them for housing.
Break the natural walls with a hammer first, then place your own walls. Even the same material works — it just has to be player-placed.
Room Too Small
The room interior is under 60 tiles total (including the frame blocks that make up walls, floor, and ceiling).
Build at minimum 10 wide × 6 tall. When in doubt, make it 12 × 7 — you'll never fail the size check.
Wrong Furniture Type
Placing a workbench and expecting it to count as a "flat surface" is correct, but a crafting station alone doesn't satisfy the comfort requirement.
You need both: a flat surface (table/workbench) AND a comfort item (chair/bed). Check the Housing Query tool to verify.
Corruption or Crimson Nearby
NPCs refuse to move into houses near Corruption, Crimson, or Dungeon tiles. The area counts as "unsafe."
Purify the area with Sunflowers (pre-Hardmode) or the Clentaminator. Keep evil biome blocks 45+ tiles away from housing.
Overcrowding Penalty
More than 3 NPCs within 25 tiles of each other triggers overcrowding — all of them get unhappy and prices go up.
Limit each cluster to 2-3 NPCs. Space clusters 25+ tiles apart. This is the single biggest mistake players make with happiness.
Cheat Sheet: Just Follow This
Always validate housing with the Housing Query tool (? icon) before assigning NPCs
Keep exactly 2-3 NPCs per cluster, spaced 25+ tiles from the next group
Place NPCs in their preferred biome first, then optimize neighbor pairings
Pylons unlock when NPCs are happy enough — plan housing around the pylon network
Use platforms as doors for compact builds — they count as valid entrances
Build NPC housing before Hardmode to have a functional pylon network ready
Expert Tip
Plan your NPC housing around the pylon network from day one. Placing 2-3 happy NPCs per biome unlocks teleportation that trivializes late-game travel. Start with Forest, Snow, Desert, and Jungle Pylons — those four cover most of the map.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the minimum NPC housing requirements in Terraria?
A valid NPC house needs at least 60 tiles of total area (minimum 10 wide × 6 tall), player-placed background walls on every tile, one light source (torch, candle, etc.), one flat surface item (table or workbench), one comfort item (chair or bed), and a door or platform entrance.
How does NPC happiness affect shop prices?
Happy NPCs offer up to 75% discount on all items including reforging costs. Happiness goes up from living in a preferred biome, near liked neighbors, and in small groups of 2-3. Unhappy NPCs charge up to 150% — that's double the normal price.
How do you unlock Pylons in Terraria?
Pylons are sold by NPCs who are happy enough in their biome. Place 2-3 NPCs who prefer that biome and like each other together. Once happiness is high enough, one of them sells the Pylon. You need 2+ NPCs near a placed Pylon to teleport.
What is the best NPC placement for cheapest reforging?
Put the Goblin Tinkerer in the Snow biome with the Mechanic nearby. Both prefer Snow and like each other, giving maximum happiness and the lowest reforging prices in the game.
Why won't my NPC move into a valid-looking house?
The most common cause is natural walls — walls generated by the world don't count. Break them with a hammer and place your own walls. Also check for nearby Corruption/Crimson blocks (45+ tiles away required) and make sure the room has all 5 required items.
What is the best NPC town layout?
Spread NPCs into small groups of 2-3 across different biomes based on their preferences. Forest: Guide + Zoologist + Golfer. Snow: Mechanic + Goblin Tinkerer + Cyborg. Desert: Arms Dealer + Nurse + Steampunker. Jungle: Dryad + Witch Doctor + Painter. Ocean: Angler + Pirate + Stylist.
How many Pylons are there in Terraria?
There are 8 Pylons: Forest, Snow, Desert, Jungle, Ocean, Mushroom, Hallow, and Underground (Cavern). The Hallow Pylon is only available in Hardmode. You also need the Universal Pylon from achieving maximum NPC happiness to place anywhere.
