Pre-Hardmode Class Equipment Guide

Complete gear progression for all 4 classes from spawn to Wall of Flesh

Which class should you pick?

First playthrough and not sure which class to pick? Here's the short version: Melee if you want to face-tank everything, Ranged for safe DPS, Mage for burst damage, Summoner for AFK-style gameplay. Read on for the details.

Melee — Highest defense, simplest gameplay. Molten Armor + Night's Edge carries you to WoF.

Ranged — Safe distance, consistent damage. Hellwing Bow shreds the Wall of Flesh.

Mage — Meteor Armor + Space Gun is broken mid-game. Highest burst but watch your mana.

Summoner — Rough early game, but Obsidian Armor + whips make it click. Great for passive players.

Each class section below is split into 4 tiers: Starting → Post-Eye → Post-Skeletron → Pre-WoF. Jump to your class and follow the progression.

Melee: High Defense, Beginner-Friendly

Melee is the safest pick for new players — highest defense, no ammo or mana to worry about, just swing and survive. The tradeoff: you have to get close to bosses, so learning to dodge matters.

Final Check Before Wall of Flesh

1

Got your endgame weapon? Night's Edge / Hellwing Bow / Demon Scythe / Imp Staff — make sure it's in your hotbar.

2

Full armor set equipped? Molten for melee, Necro for ranged, Jungle/Meteor for mage, Bee for summoner.

3

Lightning Boots crafted? Every class needs the speed and flight for the WoF fight.

4

Potions stocked? Ironskin, Regeneration, and Swiftness — bring at least 30 of each.

5

Hell bridge built? At least 800 blocks long. You'll be running and shooting the entire fight.

Before you summon the Wall of Flesh: double-check your weapon, armor, and accessories. Hell bridge built? Potions stocked? Then toss that Guide Voodoo Doll — Hardmode awaits.

Pro Tip

Don't lock into a class before Eye of Cthulhu. Use the strongest weapon you find regardless of type. Real class identity starts after you beat the Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu and unlock class-specific armor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best class for beginners in Terraria?

Melee is the most beginner-friendly class thanks to high defense and no ammo or mana requirements. Ranger is a close second — it keeps you at a safe distance and has easy-to-find weapons like the Minishark.

When should I commit to a single class?

Start specializing after defeating the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu, when class-specific armor sets (Shadow/Crimson) become available. Before that, use whatever strongest weapon you find regardless of class.

Can I switch classes mid-game?

Yes, you can switch classes at any time by changing your armor and weapons. However, switching is easier earlier in the game. By late Pre-Hardmode, you'll have invested significant resources into one class's gear, so switching means re-farming.
