Pre-Hardmode Class Equipment Guide
Complete gear progression for all 4 classes from spawn to Wall of Flesh
Which class should you pick?
First playthrough and not sure which class to pick? Here's the short version: Melee if you want to face-tank everything, Ranged for safe DPS, Mage for burst damage, Summoner for AFK-style gameplay. Read on for the details.
Melee — Highest defense, simplest gameplay. Molten Armor + Night's Edge carries you to WoF.
Ranged — Safe distance, consistent damage. Hellwing Bow shreds the Wall of Flesh.
Mage — Meteor Armor + Space Gun is broken mid-game. Highest burst but watch your mana.
Summoner — Rough early game, but Obsidian Armor + whips make it click. Great for passive players.
Each class section below is split into 4 tiers: Starting → Post-Eye → Post-Skeletron → Pre-WoF. Jump to your class and follow the progression.
Melee: High Defense, Beginner-Friendly
Melee is the safest pick for new players — highest defense, no ammo or mana to worry about, just swing and survive. The tradeoff: you have to get close to bosses, so learning to dodge matters.

Starting
Wooden Sword
Cactus SwordDon't stay at this tier long. Rush underground for gold/platinum ore to upgrade.

Post-Eye of Cthulhu
Blade of Grass
StarfuryShield of Cthulhu dash i-frames are huge for boss fights. Farm Eye until you get it.

Post-Skeletron
Muramasa
Night's Edge componentsYour main goal this tier: collect all 4 Night's Edge swords. Craft Molten Armor while you're at it.

Pre-Wall of Flesh
Night's Edge
Cascade (yoyo)Night's Edge + full Molten + Lightning Boots — that's the melee WoF loadout. Don't fight without it.
Ranged: Safe Distance, Ammo Management
Ranged lives on distance — stay far, shoot straight, die less. The cost is ammo management. Always stock up before a boss fight.

Starting
Wooden Bow
ShurikenCheck snow biome for an Ice Bow early. Craft Flaming Arrows in bulk.

Post-Eye of Cthulhu
Demon Bow/Tendon Bow
BoomstickBoomstick is a Jungle chest jackpot. Pair with Unholy/Jester Arrows for extra damage.

Post-Skeletron
Phoenix Blaster
Star CannonPhoenix Blaster is the answer here. Grab the Handgun from Dungeon, smelt Hellstone Bars.

Pre-Wall of Flesh
Hellwing Bow
Bee's Knees
MinisharkHellwing Bow is the go-to for WoF — bat projectiles auto-track and pierce. Necro Armor + Lightning Boots and you're set.
Mage: High Burst, Mana Management
Mage has the highest burst damage of all 4 classes, but you need to manage your mana bar. Meteor Armor + Space Gun is the most broken combo in pre-Hardmode.

Starting
Wand of Sparking
Gem StaffsMana is scarce early. Pick up every Fallen Star — 5 craft a Mana Crystal (+20 max mana).

Post-Eye of Cthulhu
Space Gun
Water BoltMeteor Armor + Space Gun = zero mana cost, unlimited firing. This combo carries you to Skeletron and beyond.

Post-Skeletron
Water Bolt
Demon ScytheDemon Scythe has a 3.3% drop rate — be patient. Once you get it, it's endgame-tier. Jungle Armor reduces mana costs, Mana Flower auto-drinks potions.

Pre-Wall of Flesh
Demon Scythe
Bee Gun
Book of SkullsDemon Scythe or Bee Gun for WoF. Jungle Armor + Mana Flower is the safe setup, or keep Meteor + Space Gun if you prefer zero mana management.
Summoner: Passive DPS, Tough Early Game
Summoner has the hardest early game — few weapons, low defense, your minions do the fighting. But once you get Obsidian Armor and whips, the class feels amazing.

Starting
Finch Staff
Slime StaffSummoner has no early armor. Let your Finch fight while you use a whip or any other weapon to help.

Post-Eye of Cthulhu
Vampire Frog Staff
SnapthornObsidian Armor is the turning point — +15% whip speed, +50% whip damage. Craft it immediately.

Post-Skeletron
Imp Staff
Spinal TapImp Staff is your graduation weapon — use it through WoF. Bee Armor gives +1 minion slot, Hive Pack makes bee weapons stronger.

Pre-Wall of Flesh
Imp Staff
Ballista StaffImp Staff + whips + Bee Armor is the summoner WoF loadout. Whip tag doubles minion focus — always whip first.

Final Check Before Wall of Flesh
Got your endgame weapon? Night's Edge / Hellwing Bow / Demon Scythe / Imp Staff — make sure it's in your hotbar.
Full armor set equipped? Molten for melee, Necro for ranged, Jungle/Meteor for mage, Bee for summoner.
Lightning Boots crafted? Every class needs the speed and flight for the WoF fight.
Potions stocked? Ironskin, Regeneration, and Swiftness — bring at least 30 of each.
Hell bridge built? At least 800 blocks long. You'll be running and shooting the entire fight.
Before you summon the Wall of Flesh: double-check your weapon, armor, and accessories. Hell bridge built? Potions stocked? Then toss that Guide Voodoo Doll — Hardmode awaits.
Pro Tip
Don't lock into a class before Eye of Cthulhu. Use the strongest weapon you find regardless of type. Real class identity starts after you beat the Eater of Worlds / Brain of Cthulhu and unlock class-specific armor.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best class for beginners in Terraria?
Melee is the most beginner-friendly class thanks to high defense and no ammo or mana requirements. Ranger is a close second — it keeps you at a safe distance and has easy-to-find weapons like the Minishark.
When should I commit to a single class?
Start specializing after defeating the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu, when class-specific armor sets (Shadow/Crimson) become available. Before that, use whatever strongest weapon you find regardless of class.
Can I switch classes mid-game?
Yes, you can switch classes at any time by changing your armor and weapons. However, switching is easier earlier in the game. By late Pre-Hardmode, you'll have invested significant resources into one class's gear, so switching means re-farming.
