Early Hardmode Complete Guide

Complete Terraria Early Hardmode guide: ore progression, class weapons, wings, biome control, and Mechanical Boss preparation. Covers all 4 classes with recommended weapons.

Overview

After defeating the Wall of Flesh, your world enters Hardmode. New ores spawn underground, powerful enemies appear in every biome, and the Corruption/Crimson begins spreading aggressively. Here's what changes and what you need to do.

6New Ores
100+New Enemies
3Mech Bosses
2New Biomes

Key Changes in Hardmode

  • New ore tiers spawn in the underground after smashing Demon/Crimson Altars
  • The Hallow biome generates across your world, along with expanded Corruption/Crimson
  • Enemy difficulty increases dramatically — pre-Hardmode gear becomes obsolete quickly
  • New NPCs, crafting stations, and progression paths become available

Smashing Altars

Smashing Demon or Crimson Altars with the Pwnhammer (dropped by Wall of Flesh) generates new Hardmode ores in your world. Each smash spawns a specific ore tier.

1

1st Smash

Spawns Cobalt or Palladium ore throughout the world

2

2nd Smash

Spawns Mythril or Orichalcum ore

3

3rd Smash

Spawns Adamantite or Titanium ore

Important Warning

Each altar smash also converts a random Stone block into Pearlstone or Ebonstone/Crimstone. Smashing more than 3 altars gives diminishing returns — the 4th smash spawns only half as much Tier 1 ore. Stick to 3-6 smashes for optimal results.

Expert Tip

Before smashing altars, set up Hellevators and biome barriers. The random corruption blocks can start new biome spreads in unwanted areas.

Ore Progression

Hardmode ores come in 3 tiers, each with two possible variants. Your world will have one variant per tier (A or B). Mine deeper to find higher-tier ores.

Key Crafting Stations

You'll need these new crafting stations to work with Hardmode ores:

Mythril / Orichalcum Anvil

Mythril / Orichalcum Anvil

Required for crafting Tier 2+ Hardmode equipment. Crafted from 10 Mythril/Orichalcum Bars.

Adamantite / Titanium Forge

Adamantite / Titanium Forge

Required for smelting Adamantite/Titanium Ore. Crafted from 30 Adamantite/Titanium Ore + Hellforge.

Initial Armor

Your first goal should be crafting a full set of Hardmode armor. Adamantite or Titanium armor provides the best pre-Mech Boss defense.

Prioritize the headpiece matching your class for the set bonus. Titanium armor's "Shadow Dodge" set bonus is generally considered superior to Adamantite's flat defense bonus.

Obtaining Wings

Wings are the single most important mobility upgrade in early Hardmode. They let you fly and negate fall damage, which is essential for boss fights and exploration.

Why Wings Matter

  • Flight and slow-fall for superior mobility in combat
  • Negates fall damage completely
  • Essential for dodging Mechanical Boss attacks
See our Wings Guide for detailed comparisons and obtaining methods →

Biome Control

In Hardmode, the Corruption/Crimson and Hallow spread aggressively. Without intervention, they can consume your entire world. Containing these biomes early is critical.

Act Early!

The Corruption/Crimson spreads through Stone, Sand, Ice, and Grass blocks. It can convert your Jungle biome permanently, destroying access to important resources and NPCs. Set up containment barriers before it's too late.

Hellevators

Dig 4+ block wide shafts from surface to the Underworld on both sides of biomes you want to protect.

Clentaminator

Purchase from the Steampunker NPC for 2 Platinum. Uses Solutions to cleanse or convert biomes.

See our Clentaminator & Biome Control Guide for a full strategy →

Mech Boss Prep

Before challenging the Mechanical Bosses, make sure you've prepared these three key areas. Proper preparation makes these fights significantly easier.

Arena Setup

  • Build a long platform (at least 200 blocks wide) in the sky
  • Place Campfires and Heart Lanterns every 40-50 blocks
  • Add Star in a Bottle if you use mana
  • Place a Nurse NPC house nearby for emergency healing

Buff Potions

  • Ironskin Potion (+8 Defense)
  • Regeneration Potion (Increased HP regen)
  • Swiftness Potion (+25% Move speed)
  • Class-specific damage potions (Rage/Wrath)

Key Accessories

  • Wings (any Hardmode wings)
  • Lightning Boots or better movement accessory
  • Cross Necklace / Star Veil (extended i-frames)
  • Class emblem (Warrior/Ranger/Sorcerer/Summoner Emblem)

Expert Tip

Start with The Destroyer — it's the easiest Mech Boss. The Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows can defeat it in under a minute. Then craft Hallowed armor from Hallowed Bars before attempting the Twins or Skeletron Prime.

Quick Reference Checklist

1

Smash 3 altars and mine all Hardmode ore tiers to craft Adamantite/Titanium armor

2

Obtain wings — this is your #1 mobility priority

3

Set up biome containment barriers (Hellevators) before corruption spreads too far

4

Get a strong class weapon: Daedalus Stormbow (Ranger), Crystal Serpent (Mage), Shadowflame Knife (Melee), or Spider Staff (Summoner)

5

Build an arena, stock up on buff potions, and equip key accessories

6

Challenge The Destroyer first, then use Hallowed Bars to gear up for the Twins and Skeletron Prime

Gear up and conquer the Mechanical Bosses!
