Expert Mode Boss Accessories Guide

Complete Treasure Bag Exclusive Accessories Breakdown

Expert Accessories Overview

In Expert Mode, every boss drops a Treasure Bag upon defeat, containing an exclusive accessory unique to that boss. These accessories are unobtainable in Normal Mode and represent the greatest reward for taking on the Expert Mode challenge. This guide covers all 8 Pre-Hardmode boss-exclusive accessories.

  • Treasure Bag accessories only drop in Expert or Master Mode, with 100% drop rate
  • Shield of Cthulhu and Worm Scarf are the strongest early-game accessories — prioritize obtaining them
  • Demon Heart unlocks a permanent 6th accessory slot, a massive upgrade
  • Corruption worlds get Worm Scarf, Crimson worlds get Brain of Confusion — world type determines availability

Immunity

Slimes become friendly and no longer attack you

Makes all Slime-type enemies passive, preventing them from attacking you. Convenient during Slime Rain events and underground exploration. However, since Slimes are relatively low-threat enemies, the actual combat value is limited — it's more of a quality-of-life accessory.

How to Obtain

Defeat King Slime in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). King Slime can be summoned with a Slime Crown or spawns naturally during Slime Rain.

Easy

Strengths

  • Complete immunity to all Slime attacks
  • Uninterrupted exploration during Slime Rain
  • Easiest Expert accessory to obtain

Weaknesses

Slimes are low-threat, limited combat value

Best For:Early exploration and Slime Rain events
King Slime is the easiest boss — a great first Expert Mode challenge.

One of the most important Expert Mode accessories. Provides a dash ability (double-tap movement key), which damages enemies on collision and grants brief invincibility frames. Also gives a permanent +2 Defense bonus. The dash is the strongest evasion tool in the game with a short cooldown, serving both offense and defense. Remains a core accessory even in late-game.

How to Obtain

Defeat the Eye of Cthulhu in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Summon with a Suspicious Looking Eye at night.

Medium

Strengths

  • Dash is the best evasion tool
  • Collision deals damage + grants i-frames
  • +2 Defense permanent bonus
  • Valuable throughout the entire game

Weaknesses

Eye of Cthulhu requires some preparation to defeat

Best For:Essential core accessory for all classes
Prioritize fighting the Eye of Cthulhu early. The dash can pass through enemies — use this to dodge boss charges.

The most powerful passive damage reduction accessory in the game. The 17% damage reduction is incredibly effective at every stage, from early game to the Moon Lord fight. Stacks multiplicatively with armor defense, significantly increasing effective HP. If your world is Corruption, this is a must-have — and the main reason many players choose Corruption.

How to Obtain

Defeat the Eater of Worlds in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Corruption worlds only. Summon with Worm Food in the Corruption.

Medium

Strengths

  • 17% damage reduction is unmatched
  • Valuable throughout the entire game
  • Stacks effectively with other defense
  • Many players choose Corruption just for this

Weaknesses

Only available in Corruption worlds

Best For:Top-tier defensive accessory for all classes
The Eater of Worlds is weak to AoE damage. Use piercing weapons like Vilethorn or Ball O' Hurt for an easy fight.

Brain of CthulhuBrain of Cthulhu
DefenseDamage

16.67% dodge chance, +10% crit after dodging

The Crimson world's alternative defensive accessory. Provides approximately a 1/6 chance to dodge attacks completely, and successful dodges grant a brief +10% critical strike bonus. While less consistent than the Worm Scarf, the dodge + crit combo offers stronger burst potential in certain situations. Significantly buffed in 1.4, making it a reliable choice for Crimson worlds.

How to Obtain

Defeat the Brain of Cthulhu in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Crimson worlds only. Summon with Bloody Spine in the Crimson.

Medium

Strengths

  • 16.67% chance to completely avoid damage
  • Post-dodge +10% crit boost increases burst
  • Significantly buffed in 1.4 update
  • Can outperform Worm Scarf with luck

Weaknesses

Dodge chance is inconsistent, relies on RNG

Best For:Crimson world defense option, crit-based builds
In phase 2, the Brain of Cthulhu splits into illusions — attack the real one. Build a large arena for the fight.
Hive Pack
Hive PackB
Queen BeeQueen Bee
SummonDamage

Enhances all bee-related weapons and accessory effects

Specifically strengthens bee-based attacks. When equipped, bees from Bee Gun, Honeycomb, and similar items become larger, fly faster, and deal more damage. A significant DPS boost for Summoners and Mages using bee weapons. However, the effect is zero if you're not using bee-related gear, making it very niche.

How to Obtain

Defeat Queen Bee in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Queen Bee is summoned in Jungle Hives by breaking Larvae or using an Abeemination.

Medium

Strengths

  • Massively boosts all bee damage
  • Excellent with bee weapon builds
  • Core DPS increase for bee builds

Weaknesses

Only effective with bee-related gear, very niche

Best For:Bee-themed Summoner and Mage builds
Build a long platform at the bottom of the hive for the Queen Bee fight. Bee Gun + Hive Pack is a strong early Summoner setup.
Bone Glove

SkeletronSkeletron
Damage

Chance to throw bones when attacking

Grants a chance to automatically throw a bone projectile when attacking enemies. The bone deals additional damage as a free extra hit. While fun and useful, the damage bonus isn't outstanding, and it struggles to compete for accessory slots in late-game setups. Best used as an early transitional accessory.

How to Obtain

Defeat Skeletron in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Summon by talking to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night.

Hard

Strengths

  • Free extra damage on attacks
  • Bone projectiles can pierce enemies
  • Fun and practical combined

Weaknesses

Inconsistent proc rate, limited damage bonus

Best For:Early-game transitional damage accessory
Skeletron is one of the harder Pre-Hardmode bosses. Build multi-layer platform arenas and stock up on healing potions. Watch out for the spinning head attack.
Bone Helm
Bone HelmB
DeerclopsDeerclops
DefenseDamage

Summons bone barrage when hit by enemies

Automatically releases a bone barrage to counterattack when struck by enemies. The counterattack damage is substantial and is entirely passive — no extra actions needed. More effective for melee characters who get hit frequently. The downside is that skilled players who dodge well may rarely trigger the effect.

How to Obtain

Defeat Deerclops in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Deerclops spawns during blizzards or can be summoned with a Deer Thing.

Hard

Strengths

  • Automatic counterattack when hit
  • Bone barrage deals solid damage
  • Fully passive, no action required

Weaknesses

Requires getting hit to trigger, less useful for dodge-heavy playstyles

Best For:Melee class and tank-oriented builds
Deerclops hits hard — make sure you have Obsidian Shield and good defense before attempting. Build a platform arena in the Snow biome.

Permanently adds a 6th accessory slot to your character upon use. This is the single most impactful Expert Mode reward — an extra slot means one more accessory for mobility, defense, or damage. The item is consumed on use and the effect is permanent, requiring no slot. This is THE core reason to play Expert Mode.

How to Obtain

Defeat the Wall of Flesh in Expert Mode and open the Treasure Bag (100% drop). Summon by throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava in the Underworld.

Hard

Strengths

  • Permanently adds one accessory slot
  • Doesn't occupy a slot after use
  • Massive upgrade for all classes
  • The core reason to play Expert Mode

Weaknesses

Wall of Flesh is a challenging boss fight

Best For:Essential permanent upgrade for every character
Build a long platform in the Underworld before the fight. Keep Lightning Boots and move in one direction — don't let the Wall catch up.
