Mechanical Bosses Strategy Guide

Complete strategies for all three Hardmode mechanical bosses

Overview

The three mechanical bosses — Destroyer, Twins, and Skeletron Prime — are the primary challenge of mid-Hardmode. Defeating all three unlocks Hallowed Bars and progresses you toward Plantera. Each boss has unique mechanics requiring different strategies.

The Destroyer

The Destroyer

A massive worm boss with high HP but vulnerable to piercing attacks. The easiest of the three.

Easiest
The Twins

The Twins

Two flying eyes with distinct attack patterns. Requires good mobility and consistent DPS.

Medium
Skeletron Prime

Skeletron Prime

Four arms with unique attacks plus a spinning head. The hardest mechanical boss.

The Destroyer

Destroyer

The Destroyer

A giant mechanical worm with 80,000 HP (120,000 in Expert). Its segments release Probes when damaged.

WeaknessHighly vulnerable to piercing weapons that can hit multiple segments simultaneously.
Recommended Weapons
  • Daedalus Stormbow + Holy Arrows
  • Nimbus Rod
  • Meteor Staff
  • Spider Staff
ArmorAdamantite/Titanium armor or Hallowed armor if available.

Build a long platform arena above ground level to avoid Probe swarms.

Holy Arrows with Daedalus Stormbow can trivialize this fight.

Probes drop hearts, so this fight gets easier as it progresses.

The Twins

Twins

The Twins

Retinazer (laser eye) and Spazmatism (fire eye) fight together. Each transforms at 50% HP.

WeaknessFocus one eye at a time. Kill Spazmatism first as its second phase is more dangerous.
Recommended Weapons
  • Megashark + Crystal Bullets
  • Daedalus Stormbow
  • Golden Shower
  • Optic Staff

Build a very long skybridge — mobility is key for dodging.

Focus Spazmatism first; its Phase 2 cursed flames are deadly.

Retinazer Phase 2 is easier to dodge with predictable laser patterns.

Skeletron Prime

Skeletron Prime

Skeletron Prime

Has a head and four arms: Saw, Vice, Laser, and Cannon. Spins at low HP.

WeaknessDestroy the Laser and Cannon arms first, then focus the head.
Recommended Weapons
  • Megashark
  • Crystal Storm
  • Shadowflame Knife
  • Blade Staff

Prioritize destroying the ranged arms (Laser and Cannon) first.

The head becomes very dangerous when spinning — maintain distance.

Must be killed before dawn or it becomes enraged and one-shots.

Summary

  1. Start with the Destroyer — it's the easiest and drops Souls of Might for Megashark.
  2. Use Megashark from the Destroyer to fight the Twins more easily.
  3. Build a long skybridge arena that works for all three bosses.
  4. Always prepare Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, and Endurance potions.
  5. Must kill each boss before dawn or they enrage and become nearly impossible.
