Terraria 1.4.5 Summoner Guide: 9 New Whips, No Mana Cost & Complete Class Overhaul

Summoners no longer need mana, 9 new whips fill every progression gap, and minion AI gets a massive upgrade — the definitive summoner breakdown

Summoner Got a Complete Overhaul

The summoner class receives its most transformative update in Terraria 1.4.5. Nine new whips cover every stage of the game, mana costs for summoning weapons have been completely removed, minion AI has been overhauled for smarter targeting, and new armor/accessory options make pure summoner builds viable from day one. This guide covers every change and provides full progression recommendations.

9 New Whips: Every One Matters

1.4.5 adds 9 new whips to the game, more than doubling the total whip count and filling critical gaps in the summoner's progression.

New whips: Cobwhip (9 dmg, slow, spider proc), Slime Whip (12 dmg, Slime+Fire), Soulscourge (17 dmg, Corruption), Vasculash (19 dmg, Crimson), Starcrash (18 dmg, meteor proc), Vulgar Display of Flower (75 dmg, petals), Electric Eel (150 dmg, lightning chain), Constellation (130 dmg, homing stars, +15% tag crit), Possession (110 dmg, vision beams).

Whip Stacking Removed — 1.4.5 removes whipstacking: only one whip's tag effect is active at a time. You can no longer equip multiple whips to layer debuffs simultaneously. Pick your strongest whip and commit — swapping mid-fight resets the tag, losing DPS.

No More Mana for Summons?

Summoning weapons no longer consume mana. This is the single biggest quality-of-life change for the summoner class.

Impact — Previously, summoners needed mana-boosting gear and mana potions just to summon their minions at the start of each life. This forced awkward hybrid builds and made pure summoner impractical in early game. With mana removal, summoners can focus entirely on summoner-specific gear from the beginning.
Build Changes — Mana-related accessories (Mana Flower, Magic Cuffs, Celestial Cuffs) are no longer needed by summoners. This frees up 1-2 accessory slots for actual summoner accessories like the Pygmy Necklace, Summoner Emblem, or the new Pal Gloves from the Palworld crossover.
Scope: Mana is removed for ALL summoning weapons — staves, sentries, and whips alike. Only magic-class weapons used in hybrid builds still consume mana. Pure summoner builds are completely mana-free from start to finish.

Minions Finally Stop Running Off

Minion AI has been significantly improved, addressing the most common complaints about summoner gameplay.

Smarter Targeting — Minions now prioritize the enemy you're attacking with your whip. Previously, minions would often attack random enemies or get stuck on walls. The new AI uses a priority system: whip target > nearest enemy to player > nearest enemy to minion. Minions also path around obstacles instead of getting stuck.
New Minion Behaviors — Flying minions now maintain optimal attack distance instead of hovering directly on top of enemies. Ground minions can jump over 3-tile gaps. All minions disengage from enemies that move more than 60 tiles away from the player, preventing them from wandering off.
Damage Adjustments — Base minion damage has been increased by 10-15% across the board to compensate for the removal of mana-based damage bonuses. Whip tag damage now stacks with minion crits, creating a meaningful DPS increase when actively using whips.
Auto Re-summon on Respawn — When you die and respawn, all previously summoned minions are automatically re-summoned at no cost. This eliminates the biggest old-summoner pain point: scrambling to re-summon everything at the start of each life while being immediately pressured by enemies.

What Should You Wear Now?

With mana removal freeing up accessory slots, here are the recommended gear setups for each stage.

Armor — Flinx Fur Coat (pre-boss) → Bee Armor (Queen Bee) → Spider Armor (Spider Caves) → Hallowed Armor with Hood (mech bosses) → Tiki Armor (Witch Doctor) → Spooky Armor (Mourning Wood) → Stardust Armor (Moon Lord).
Core Accessories — Pygmy Necklace (+1 minion), Summoner Emblem (+15% damage), Hercules Beetle (+15% damage, +2 knockback), Papyrus Scarab (+15% damage, +1 minion). New: Pal Gloves (+12% damage, drop capture), Lifmunk Scarf (passive healing).
Best-in-Slot Endgame — Stardust Armor, Papyrus Scarab, Hercules Beetle, Pygmy Necklace, Pal Gloves, Celestial Shell. Weapon: Stardust Dragon Staff + Constellation. This setup reaches 6 minion slots with ~85% bonus damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What new whips were added in Terraria 1.4.5?

9 new whips: Cobwhip (9 dmg, slow, spider proc), Slime Whip (12 dmg, Slime+On Fire!), Soulscourge (17 dmg, Corruption), Vasculash (19 dmg, Crimson), Starcrash (18 dmg, meteor proc on minion hit), Vulgar Display of Flower (75 dmg, drops from Plantera), Electric Eel (150 dmg, lightning chain, drops from Duke Fishron), Constellation (130 dmg, 6 homing stars + 15% tag crit), Possession (110 dmg, Moon Lord drop). Every stage now has dedicated whip options.

Does summoner still need mana in Terraria 1.4.5?

No. Summoning staves no longer cost mana — you can summon all your minions for free every life. Sentinel weapons and magic hybrid weapons still use mana, but pure summoner builds are completely mana-free.

How does minion AI work in Terraria 1.4.5?

Minions use a priority system: whip target first, then nearest enemy to player, then nearest enemy to minion. They path around obstacles, maintain optimal attack range, and disengage from enemies 60+ tiles away. Ground minions jump 3-tile gaps. Base damage is up 10-15% across the board.

What's the best summoner build in Terraria 1.4.5?

Endgame best-in-slot: Stardust Armor + Stardust Dragon Staff + Constellation + Papyrus Scarab + Hercules Beetle + Pygmy Necklace + Pal Gloves + Celestial Shell. This setup gives 6 minion slots with ~85% bonus damage.

How do I start playing summoner in Terraria 1.4.5?

Find a Finch Staff in a Living Tree chest first, then craft a Cobwhip (30 Cobwebs + 10 Wood at Loom). Upgrade to Flinx Staff + Flinx Fur Coat, then aim for Imp Staff + Starcrash (20 Meteorite Bars + 10 Chains + 10 Fallen Stars) before tackling Wall of Flesh. You never need mana gear — stack summoner accessories from day one.

Is summoner viable in Terraria 1.4.5?

Yes, summoner is now one of the strongest classes. Mana removal eliminates the biggest early-game weakness, 9 new whips give you meaningful weapon choices at every stage, and the buffed minion AI means your damage actually hits the right target. Pure summoner clears Moon Lord reliably.

What armor should summoners use in Terraria 1.4.5?

Armor path: Flinx Fur Coat (pre-boss) → Bee Armor (Queen Bee) → Spider Armor (Spider Caves) → Hallowed Armor with Hood (mech bosses) → Tiki Armor (post-Plantera) → Spooky Armor (Mourning Wood) → Stardust Armor (endgame). Each upgrade meaningfully increases your minion count and damage bonus.
