Why Choose Mage?

  • Space Gun + Meteor Armor = zero mana cost infinite damage — one of the strongest early combos in the game
  • Demon Scythe has the highest magic damage in Pre-Hardmode with piercing capability
  • Water Bolt can be found before any boss fight and devastates in enclosed spaces
  • Diverse damage types: bouncing, homing, piercing, and controllable projectiles

Water Bolt

Water Bolt fires bouncing water projectiles that ricochet 5 times and pierce through 9 enemies. In enclosed spaces, a single bolt can hit the same enemy repeatedly. Pairs well with auto-cast (Mana Flower) for sustained bouncing damage.

How to Obtain

Found on bookshelves in the Dungeon — look for blue-colored books. Can sometimes spawn on shelves near the Dungeon entrance, obtainable before beating Skeletron.

Easy to Obtain

Advantages

  • Bouncing projectiles hit enemies multiple times in tight spaces
  • Can be found very early with lucky Dungeon shelf spawns
  • Low mana cost for sustained casting without running dry
  • Excellent for underground and Dungeon combat

Caution

Much less effective in open areas where bolts fly away without bouncing

Best For:Underground and Dungeon combat where walls amplify bouncing damage

Space Gun

Space Gun fires a fast laser-like projectile and is best known for its synergy with Meteor Armor, which reduces its mana cost to zero. This zero-cost bonus also applies to the Gray and Orange Zapinator if you find one.

How to Obtain

Crafted at an Iron/Lead Anvil using 20 Meteorite Bars. Meteorite ore spawns after destroying a Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart.

Easy to Obtain

Advantages

  • Zero mana cost with Meteor Armor — unlimited sustained DPS
  • Fast projectile with decent 17 base damage
  • No ammo or mana concerns at all with full armor set
  • Available early after first Evil Boss / Shadow Orb destruction

Caution

Requires Meteor Armor for full effectiveness; mediocre without the set bonus

Best For:Early-to-mid game mage build with Meteor Armor for zero-cost casting

Demon Scythe

Demon Scythe fires a large scythe that starts slow then accelerates — this unique mechanic means stationary targets (like WoF's eyes) get hit multiple times by a single spinning projectile. Highest magic damage in Pre-Hardmode.

How to Obtain

Dropped by Demons and Voodoo Demons in the Underworld at a 1/35 (2.86%) drop rate.

Hard to Obtain

Advantages

  • Piercing hits multiple enemies in a line — devastating against groups
  • Highest magic damage (35) in all of Pre-Hardmode
  • Large projectile is easy to aim and hard to miss
  • Excellent for Wall of Flesh with its piercing capability

Caution

Low drop rate requires dedicated Underworld farming; slow projectile can miss fast enemies

Best For:Late Pre-Hardmode and Wall of Flesh fight with high piercing damage

Bee Gun

Bee Gun
Gun · HomingBee Gun
9 Damage 12 Use Time 0 Knockback 4% Crit

Bee Gun fires a swarm of homing bees that track enemies automatically. While each bee deals low damage, the rapid fire rate and homing create strong sustained DPS. Hive Pack accessory boosts bee damage and tracking ability.

How to Obtain

Dropped by Queen Bee at a 1/3 (33%) chance. Queen Bee is summoned in the Underground Jungle.

Medium

Advantages

  • Homing projectiles never miss — auto-targeting enemies
  • Excellent sustained DPS in enclosed spaces
  • High 33% drop rate from Queen Bee
  • Great supplementary weapon alongside other magic

Caution

Individual bee damage is low; less effective in open areas where bees spread out

Best For:Queen Bee re-fights and enclosed arena combat

Flamelash

Flamelash
Wand · ControllableFlamelash
34 Damage 20 Use Time 6.5 Knockback 4% Crit

Flamelash fires a controllable fireball that follows your cursor. The fireball also has auto-homing when near enemies — it curves toward nearby targets even without precise cursor guidance.

How to Obtain

Found in Shadow Chests in the Underworld. Requires a Shadow Key from the Dungeon.

Medium

Advantages

  • Cursor-guided projectile for precise targeting of enemies
  • Can navigate around obstacles and corners to hit hidden enemies
  • Solid 34 base damage with reliable control
  • Unique playstyle not found in other Pre-Hardmode weapons

Caution

Requires manual cursor guidance which can be difficult during hectic boss fights

Best For:Precision targeting through obstacles and around corners

Book of Skulls

Book of Skulls
Spell Book · PiercingBook of Skulls
34 Damage 18 Use Time 5 Knockback 4% Crit

Book of Skulls fires homing skull projectiles that pierce 3 enemies and can hit the same target multiple times. In Expert Mode, Skeletron has a 33% drop rate. Reliable 34 damage with built-in tracking.

How to Obtain

Dropped by Skeletron at a 1/7 (14.3%) chance.

Medium

Advantages

  • Piercing skulls hit multiple enemies in their path
  • Moderate mana cost for efficient sustained casting
  • Reliable 14.3% drop rate from Skeletron
  • Solid 34 damage for post-Skeletron progression

Caution

Requires defeating Skeletron, which is a challenging boss without good gear

Best For:Post-Skeletron magic damage with efficient mana usage
