Why Choose Melee?

  • Molten Armor provides the highest defense in Pre-Hardmode, great survivability for new players
  • No ammo or mana needed — swing, hit, done. Zero resource management
  • Night's Edge is the strongest Pre-Hardmode weapon and upgrades into True Night's Edge in Hardmode
  • Diverse subtypes: swords, yoyos, flails, spears — there's a melee weapon for every playstyle

Starfury

Starfury is one of the best early-game melee weapons. When you swing it, stars fall from the sky dealing 1.5x weapon damage (37 base), giving it pseudo-ranged capability that most early swords lack. Stars pierce through 1 enemy before disappearing.

How to Obtain

Found in Skyware Chests on Floating Islands. Build bridges upward or use Gravitation Potions to find Floating Islands in the sky layer.

Easy to Obtain

Advantages

  • Stars deal additional damage through blocks — hits enemies below you
  • Available very early through sky exploration, no boss kills needed
  • Great for surface and underground combat with star rain
  • 22 base damage is excellent for the point in progression when obtained

Caution

Less effective in enclosed underground spaces where stars cannot fall freely through the ceiling

Best For:Early game exploration, surface boss fights like Eye of Cthulhu and King Slime

Blade of Grass

Blade of Grass
Sword · PoisonBlade of Grass
28 Damage 30 Use Time 3 Knockback 4% Crit

Blade of Grass is a solid mid-tier sword crafted from Jungle materials. It has a chance to inflict the Poisoned debuff on enemies. In 1.4.4+, each swing releases a homing leaf projectile that deals 4 damage with 20 armor penetration and pierces 2 enemies.

How to Obtain

Crafted at an Iron/Lead Anvil using 12 Jungle Spores and 15 Stingers. Both materials drop from enemies and plants in the Underground Jungle.

Medium

Advantages

  • Chance to apply Poisoned debuff for extra damage over time
  • Good stepping stone toward Night's Edge crafting
  • Decent 28 damage for mid-game progression
  • Crafting materials are abundant in the Underground Jungle

Caution

Requires Jungle exploration which can be dangerous at mid-game gear levels

Best For:Mid-game combat and Night's Edge crafting component

Night's Edge

Night's Edge is the ultimate Pre-Hardmode sword, combining four powerful blades into one devastating weapon. In 1.4.4+, swings produce a spinning energy aura that hits up to 2 additional enemies. Essential component in the Zenith crafting chain (Night's Edge → True Night's Edge → Terra Blade → Zenith).

How to Obtain

Crafted at a Demon/Crimson Altar by combining Light's Bane (or Blood Butcherer), Muramasa, Blade of Grass, and Fiery Greatsword. Each component comes from a different biome.

Hard to Obtain

Advantages

  • Highest base melee damage (42) in all of Pre-Hardmode
  • Required component for True Night's Edge → Terra Blade in Hardmode
  • Large swing arc hits multiple enemies simultaneously
  • The definitive Pre-Hardmode melee weapon — nothing compares

Caution

Requires extensive progression through 4 different biomes to gather all component swords

Best For:Wall of Flesh fight and early Hardmode transition

Cascade

Cascade
Yoyo · Fire DebuffCascade
27 Damage 25 Use Time 3 Knockback 4% Crit

Cascade is the strongest Pre-Hardmode yoyo, dropped by enemies in the Underworld. It inflicts the On Fire! debuff and allows you to deal consistent damage while staying at a safe distance. Once Hardmode starts, Cascade is replaced by Hel-Fire and can no longer drop — grab it before Wall of Flesh.

How to Obtain

Dropped by any enemy in the Underworld at a 1/400 (0.25%) chance. Farm Underworld enemies while exploring for Hellstone.

Medium

Advantages

  • Inflicts On Fire! debuff for extra damage over time
  • Safe ranged-melee playstyle — attack from a distance
  • Good sustained damage output at range
  • Synergizes with Yoyo Bag for doubled effectiveness

Caution

Low drop rate (0.25%) requires dedicated Underworld farming

Best For:Players who prefer safe, distance-based melee playstyle

Sunfury

Sunfury
Flail · Fire DebuffSunfury
64 Damage 45 Use Time 6.75 Knockback 11% Crit

Sunfury is a powerhouse flail with the highest base damage (64) of any Pre-Hardmode weapon. It inflicts On Fire! on contact. In 1.4.5+, you can throw Sunfury and Blue Moon simultaneously for massive dual-flail DPS.

How to Obtain

Found in Shadow Chests in the Underworld. Requires a Shadow Key (crafted from materials in the Dungeon) to open.

Medium

Advantages

  • Highest base damage (64) of any Pre-Hardmode weapon with 11% crit
  • On Fire! debuff adds damage over time on every hit
  • Excellent reach for a melee weapon — safer than swords
  • Great crowd control against groups of enemies

Caution

Flail mechanics require practice; slower attack speed than swords

Best For:Crowd control and high-knockback situations against groups

Dark Lance

Dark Lance
Spear · Long RangeDark Lance
34 Damage 22 Use Time 6 Knockback 4% Crit

Dark Lance is one of the best Pre-Hardmode spears, offering excellent reach and solid damage. In 1.4.4+, it inflicts Shadowflame debuff for 4-5 seconds — the only source of this debuff before Hardmode. The spear tip also generates a shockwave that extends its effective range.

How to Obtain

Found in Shadow Chests in the Underworld. Requires a Shadow Key from the Dungeon to open these chests.

Medium

Advantages

  • Outstanding reach for safe engagement distance
  • Great for narrow corridors and tunnel combat
  • Solid 34 damage with good 6 knockback
  • Thrusting attack keeps enemies at spear-length distance

Caution

Single-direction thrust limits usefulness against groups attacking from multiple angles

Best For:Tunnel combat and maintaining distance from dangerous enemies
