Why Choose Ranger?

  • Safest attack range — deal damage without getting hit, highest boss fight survival rate

  • Ammo versatility: Silver Bullets for bosses, Jester Arrows for piercing, Meteor Shots for bounce
  • Molten Fury and Phoenix Blaster are excellent Wall of Flesh weapons

Minishark

Minishark is a rapid-fire gun that shoots at incredible speed. Despite low per-shot damage, its extreme fire rate makes it one of the most effective boss-killing weapons in Pre-Hardmode. Has a 33% chance not to consume ammo — pair with Meteor Shots for ricochet or Silver/Tungsten Bullets for raw damage.

How to Obtain

Purchased from the Arms Dealer NPC for 35 Gold Coins. The Arms Dealer moves in once you have a gun or bullets in your inventory.

Easy to Obtain

Advantages

  • Extremely high fire rate shreds bosses with sustained DPS
  • Easy to obtain — just buy it from the Arms Dealer for 35 Gold
  • Pairs amazingly with Meteor Shots and Silver Bullets for bonus damage
  • 33% chance not to consume ammo, saving resources

Caution

Consumes ammo rapidly; stock up on bullets before boss fights

Best For:Boss fights with sustained DPS, especially Eye of Cthulhu and Skeletron

Boomstick

Boomstick
Shotgun · BurstBoomstick
14 Damage 38 Use Time 5.75 Knockback 4% Crit

Boomstick is a shotgun-type weapon found in the Jungle that fires 3-4 bullets per shot but only consumes 1 ammo. At close range, all pellets hit the same target for devastating burst damage. Pair with Meteor Shots for spread + ricochet combo.

How to Obtain

Found in Ivy Chests located in the Underground Jungle. Explore Jungle caverns and look for the distinctive green chests.

Easy to Obtain

Advantages

  • Massive burst damage at close range — all pellets hit large targets
  • Available early through Jungle chest exploration
  • Excellent against large bosses like Queen Bee
  • Great for clearing groups with pellet spread

Caution

Damage drops off significantly at longer ranges due to bullet spread

Best For:Close-range burst damage against large bosses like Queen Bee

Molten Fury

Molten Fury is the strongest bow in Pre-Hardmode, crafted from Hellstone Bars. It automatically converts any Wooden Arrows into Flaming Arrows. Pair with Hellfire Arrows for AoE explosion damage, or Jester Arrows for infinite piercing against segmented bosses like Wall of Flesh.

How to Obtain

Crafted at an Iron/Lead Anvil using 15 Hellstone Bars. Mine Hellstone in the Underworld and smelt with Obsidian at a Hellforge.

Medium

Advantages

  • Highest bow damage (31) in all of Pre-Hardmode
  • Auto-converts Wooden Arrows to Flaming Arrows for free fire damage
  • Cost-effective — cheap Wooden Arrows become powerful Flaming Arrows
  • Excellent for Wall of Flesh with Hellfire or Jester Arrows

Caution

Requires Hellstone mining which is dangerous without proper gear and Obsidian Skin Potions

Best For:Wall of Flesh fight with Hellfire or Jester Arrows

Phoenix Blaster

Phoenix Blaster
Handgun · UpgradePhoenix Blaster
30 Damage 14 Use Time 2 Knockback 4% Crit

Phoenix Blaster is an upgraded Handgun dealing 30 damage with a fast fire rate. On PC 1.4.4+, it has auto-fire. Pair with Meteor Shots for piercing or Party Bullets for high single-target damage.

Medium

Advantages

  • More efficient ammo usage compared to Minishark
  • Strong against both bosses and regular enemies
  • Reliable DPS from mid to late Pre-Hardmode

Requires finding a Handgun in the Dungeon first, which needs Skeletron defeat

Best For:All-around ranged combat from mid to late Pre-Hardmode

Star Cannon

Star Cannon
Gun · Ultra DamageStar Cannon
55 Damage 12 Use Time 1 Knockback 4% Crit

Star Cannon has the highest raw damage of any Pre-Hardmode ranged weapon, firing Fallen Stars for 55 damage per shot. Warning: in For the Worthy / Get Fixed Boi seeds, Wall of Flesh reflects Fallen Star projectiles back at you — do NOT use Star Cannon in these seeds.

How to Obtain

Crafted at an Iron/Lead Anvil using a Minishark, 20 Meteorite Bars, and 5 Fallen Stars.

Hard to Obtain

Advantages

  • Highest single-shot damage (55) in all of Pre-Hardmode
  • Can trivialize most Pre-Hardmode bosses with stockpiled ammo
  • Impressive burst damage potential against any target
  • Makes boss fights extremely short when you have stars

Caution

Fallen Stars only spawn at night on the surface, making ammo extremely limited

Best For:Burst-killing bosses when you have stockpiled Fallen Stars

Hellwing Bow

Hellwing Bow
Bow · PiercingHellwing Bow
22 Damage 19 Use Time 5 Knockback 4% Crit

Hellwing Bow converts any arrows into flaming bat projectiles with infinite piercing and auto-fire. Against oversized targets like Wall of Flesh, every bat hits — making it a sleeper pick for the WoF fight.

How to Obtain

Found in Shadow Chests in the Underworld. Requires a Shadow Key (crafted in the Dungeon) to open.

Medium

Advantages

  • Piercing projectiles hit multiple enemies in a line
  • Any arrow becomes a flaming bat — works with cheap Wooden Arrows
  • Excellent for Blood Moon and Goblin Army events
  • Great crowd control during multi-enemy encounters

Caution

Lower single-target DPS compared to Molten Fury or Phoenix Blaster

Best For:Crowd control during events and multi-enemy encounters

Beenades

Beenades release 15-24 homing bees on detonation — the single best Wall of Flesh weapon for any class. Each bee homes in on enemies independently, shredding both the main body and the Hungry. Stockpile 200+ before attempting WoF.

How to Obtain

Queen Bee drop (75% / 100% in Expert) — drops 10-30 per kill. Also craftable: 1 Grenade + 1 Bee Wax at any crafting station.

Medium

Advantages

  • The best Wall of Flesh weapon in the entire game, period — works for every class
  • Homing bees auto-target both WoF body and Hungry simultaneously
  • Farmable by re-fighting Queen Bee — each kill drops 10-30
  • Also craftable from Grenades + Bee Wax for infinite supply
